Charles E. Sentman Longtime W'burg Grocer, Dies At 77
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Frist Baptist church in Steamboat Rock for Charles E. Sentman, 77, who passed away at his Steamboat Rock home Saturday.
Rev. Elton Kirstein officiated. Vocalists were Mrs. A. E. Luiken, Mrs. John Frerichs Jr., Royce Luiken and John Frerichs Jr. Mrs. Irvin Gast was the organist.
Pallbearers were Ben J. Eilers, John J. Eilers, Hie H. Folkerts, Folkert D. DeVries, Edward Bear Jr. and Harry Luiken. Mrs. Dena Hartman and Mrs. Pete Luiken were the flower ladies.
Charles Elwood Sentman, son of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Sentman, was born in the Dakota Territory on March 10, 1888. His early boyhood was spent in Altoona, Pa., and at Union.
At the age of 12, he began working as an apprentice in his uncle's print shop. At 18, he was editor of both the Union Star and the Steamboat Rock Pilot.
On January 18, 1909, Charles was wed to Frieda Eilers of Steamboat Rock. To this union was born one son, Carl.
After several years in the newspaper business and one year of farming, the couple began a general store in Steamboat Rock. Twenty-five years later, they opened the store at Wellsburg which they operated until their retirement in 1964, having spent 52 years in the store business.
He was a member of the First Baptist church in Steamboat Rock, serving as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He also was a director of the Midwest Evangelistic Association.
Surviving are his wife; one son, Carl of Bemidji, Minn.; one granddaughter, Mrs. Clarice Meyers of LaGrange Park, Ill.; one grandson, Paul Sentman of Mason City; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, William H. Sentman of Waterloo.
A brother, Harry, preceded him in death.
