George E. Shear, Clergyman, Dies At Cedar Falls

Stroke Six Weeks Ago Fatal to Retired Minister of M. E. Church

Cedar Falls--George E. Shear, 75, retired Methodist Episcopal clergyman who had spent more than 50 years in the ministry, died Sunday at 3:15 a.m. at his home, 2416 College street. He suffered a stroke of apoplexy about six weeks ago and his health had been declining since.

The funeral will be Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 in the M. E. church here, following brief rites at the home. Rev. W. G. Rowley will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery.

Mr. Shear was born in Montgomery, Ill., on March 8, 1856. He had been engaged as supply pastor for the churches at Raymond and Dinsdale until October of 1930. The family moved here three years ago from Mt. Vernon, where they had lived a year. Previously they had resided at Reinbeck, where Rev. Mr. Shear had served three separate pastorates.

Surviving are the widow, a daughter, Grace Eleanor, who is a student at Teacher college, and a son, H. C. Shear of Waterloo. A sister and a brother also survive, Mrs. Cora Flingerland of Portland, Ore., and Charles E. Shear, Denver, Colo.

Pastor Formerly at Rockford Dies; Rites Will Be Wednesday

Rockford, March 17--The Rev. George E. Shear, former pastor of the Methodist church here, died at his home in Cedar Falls following a stroke of paralysis suffered three weeks before. Mr. Shear served as pastor here from 1900 to 1903, going from here to Nashua. Later he returned here and at that time was cashier in the First National Bank. He retired from active ministry several years ago but had been doing supply work when necessary. The funeral will be held in the Methodist church at Cedar Falls Wednesday with burial there. The Rev. Charles E. Luce, pastor of the Methodist church here, will attend the funeral and serve as a pallbearer.
