Mrs. Sam Claassen Funeral Tuesday
Mrs. Sam Claassen, 86, of Grundy Center, died at 2:30 a.m. Saturday at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient for two weeks.
Death was due to cancer. She had been in failing health for some time.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bethany Presbyterian Church with Rev. S. H. Buschman officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery, Grundy Center.
Casketbearers were Carl Palmer, Douglas Arends, Glenn Ellinger, Arnold Schultz, Harry Barnes and L. S. Pike.
Mrs. Claassen, the former Martha Neessen, was born August 27, 1882, in Colfax township, the daughter of Thomas and Alberta Neessen.
She was married to Samuel Claassen on March 1, 1905, in St. Paul's Lutheran church near Wellsburg. The couple farmed in Colfax and Pleasant Valley townships until they moved to Grundy Center in 1931, then to Stout in 1934, Parkersburg in 1936, and then back to Grundy Center in 1940.
Mr. Claassen died in 1962.
She is survived by eight children. They are Helen, at home; Edna, Mrs. Ted Bergman, of Cedar Falls; Lloyd, Waterloo; Thomas and Harold, Grundy Center; Alvin, Waterloo; Arvilla, Mrs. Bob Berry, West Covina, Calif.; and Wayne, Waterloo.
Also surviving are 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Dena Knock of Grundy Center, Mrs. Alice Claassen of Grundy Center, and Mrs. Raymond Murphy of Waterloo; and two brothers, Hieko T. Neessen of Grundy Center and Thomas Neessen, Waterloo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two infant daughters, three brothers, one sister, and one brother and one sister in infancy.
