Lawrence “Sonny” Henry Aalfs, age 90, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of Henry and Hattie (Harms) Aalfs, on August 16, 1922, rural Grundy County, near Wellsburg, Iowa. He received his education from a country school, Colfax Township #3, near his home.
Sonny was inducted to the United States Army Air Corp. on January 18, 1946. He served as a Teletype Operator and was honorably discharged on March 31, 1947.
On September 29, 1946, Lawrence was united in marriage with Margaret Anita Alter at the Salem Lutheran Church, rural Parkersburg. They made their home and farmed on the family farm near Wellsburg for 37 years. During this time he also worked a year at Monsanto and sorted corn for Marlin Meyer. The couple moved and lived on an acreage near Parkersburg for a year. In 1984 they moved into Parkersburg and Sonny helped Marvin Hook with farming for 12 years.
Sonny was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wellsburg, where he had served on the church board. He was a lifelong member of the Parkersburg American Legion Post #285. In his spare time Sonny enjoyed going to auctions, collecting glassware and coins. He liked spending many hours in his garage tinkering around, also tending to his garden and particularly he enjoyed their sweet potatoes. His pride and joy was his family and loved spending time with them all.
Lawrence died Monday, June 17, 2013, at Maple Manor Village in Aplington, Iowa, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by one son, Lowell Aalfs in May of 1996; his parents; one brother, Jake Aalfs; and one sister, Mary Henricks.
Lawrence is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Margaret Aalfs of Parkersburg; two sons, Lee (Kathy) Aalfs of Parkersburg, and Loren (Deb) Aalfs of Cedar Falls; four grandchildren, Melissa & Miekka Aalfs and Tyler & Quinn Aalfs; one great-grandson, Lennox Aalfs; one brother, Harm Aalfs of Grundy Center; and one brother-in-law, Edgar Henricks of Reinbeck.
Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday June 21, 2013, at Bethel Lutheran Church with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, both in Parkersburg.
Visitation will be 5:30 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church.
