Obituary

J. H. Gereke was born in Germany in 1842 and died at his home in Wellsburg Tuesday evening July 18th at the age of sixty-three. He came to this country when sixteen years old and settled at Burlington, Iowa. He made his home there for thirty years after which he moved to Wellsburg and made that his home continually up to the time of his death.

Mr. Gereke was married at Burlington to Miss Frederieka Nesemann who with six children survives him. The children are Mrs. Beard, Mrs. Chase, Mrs. Fred Miller, Miss Clara, Fred and Edward.

Mr. Gereke was engaged in the hotel and livery business during the time he lived in Wellsburg. For several years he retired from the hotel but retained his livery business most of the time. He was public spirited in all things and made a good citizen for the town. During the last year of his life he was a constant and a heavy sufferer, but bore this with a patience that was most rare.
