Obituary

The death of Mr. Ferdinand C. Martin occurred at his home in this city last Friday morning about 10:30 o'clock. Mr. Martin had been sick with a complication of diseases for several months each severe attack making him weaker, and several weeks ago was obliged to take to his bed from which he was never able to get up. The tender care of his wife and the daughter, who has been here the past month assisting her mother, and all the assistance medical aid could give were unavailable and the end came after weeks of suffering.

Mr. Martin was born in Soldin, Germany, April 16, 1842 and came to this country when a young man about forty-seven years ago. He was married May 13, 1866 to Johanna Goettel. About the year 1870 he came to Ackley and in partnership with W. H. Goettel, was engaged in the hardware business, in which he continued later with Leonard Faust and then as sole owner up to about four years ago when he retired from active business life. During the time he was associated in the affairs of our little city he was energetic and took a keen interest in everything that was progressive and helped toward the up-building of the city. He has always been known as a man of strict integrity and stood high in the community. Brothers and sisters who survive him are: August Martin, Lansing, Iowa; Fred Martin, Cedar Falls; Chas. Martin, Carbondale, Illinois; Herman Martin, New Albion, Iowa; Frank Martin, Omaha, Nebraska; Wilhelmina Baske, Inwood, Iowa. A brother and sister, Julius Martin of this city and Henrietta Kehrberg of Lansing, Iowa, have preceded him to the great beyond. Six children also, besides his wife, are left who will feel keenly the loss of a good father: Louise Maune, St. Louis; Hilda Pleasants, Vevay, Indiana; Will Martin, Wellsburg; Rube, Kirbyville, Texas; Etta Philleo, Aledo, Illinois; and Alma Wick of Seattle, Washington.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Presbyterian church, Rev. Hugh McNinch officiating.

Relatives present from out of the city were: Will and Herman Kerberg, LeMars; Fred Martin, Cedar Falls; Herman Martin, New Albion; Frank Martin and wife, Omaha; Mr. Philleo, Mr. Pleasants and Gus. Maune and little son.
