Died--Eliza J. Butler, April 17th, 1888, of hemiplegia, after a long and painful illness. Eliza J. Johnson was born at Jacksonville, Ill., Aug. 23rd, 1829. At this place she spent the most of her life, surrounded by many warm and admiring friends. In October, 1850, she united in marriage with W. S. Butler, and lived in Jacksonville until the removal of the family from that place to Grundy county in March, 1871. She was the mother of seven children, three boys and four girls who, together with the sorrowing father and husband, and an only living brother, remain to mourn their loss. Deceased was a member of the Presbyterian church for 35 years, and was a faithful devoted christian. The funeral took place April 18th, from the Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. McLane, and was attended by a large number of sympathizing friends. The remains were interred in Rose Hill cemetery. There the husband bid a last farewell to a faithful and loving wife, and sons, and daughters, with hearts breaking with grief, saw returning to dust the kind and tender mother, the light of the fireside now forever gone. The Republican joins the host of sympathizing friends in words of condolence and heartfelt sympathy to the sorrowing family who mourn the loss of earth's dearest treasure.

--Grundy County Republican (Grundy Center, Iowa), 25 April 1888, pg 5
