Former Wellsburg Exchange Student Dies In Germany

Bert Jansen of Bornheim-Rosberg, Germany, died on May 12, at the Transplantation Center in Essen, Germany, following a second bone marrow transplant. He was diagnosed with Osteomyelofibrosis in November 2001. He was a chemistry teacher, retiring in 2001 due to his illness.

Bert was born on Jan. 15, 1947, in Aachen, Germany, the son of Ernst and Irmgardd Jansen. Surviving him are his wife, Gudrun, and also two daughters, Imke and Merle.

During the 1964-65 Wellsburg Community School year, Bert attended school here and lived in the home of Leonard and Kay Gelder, under the auspices of the International Christian Youth Exchange Program and the Wellsburg Reformed Church. His stay marked the first time an international exchange student had come to temporarily live in Wellsburg.

In 1999, Bert, his wife and daughters, visited the Gelders. An open house was held at that time for his classmates and other relatives and friends.
