William "Bill" Sprole passed away unexpectedly at his home, Bellevue Independent and Assisted Living Center in Green Bay, Wi., on Feb. 27, 2012. Bill was born Feb. 7, 1938 in Cedar Falls, Ia. He was the son of William "Marvin" Sprole and Mary Hope Terrall Sprole, who resided in Dike, Ia.
Bill attended Dike Community School and graduated in 1956. Bill then served two years active, two years reserve duty in the U. S. Army and was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska. Bill attended the State College of Iowa (UNI) and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1964. While at SCI Bill was a member of the mens glee club. Bill’s first teaching position was at LaPorte City Community School where he taught English and speech from 1964 to 1968. Bill then moved to Green Bay, Wi., where he began teaching Speech at Southwest High School in 1968 until his retirement in 1987.
During summer vacations for several years Bill became known as Mr. Caboose. He owned and operated Mr. Caboose which was located at the Ashwaubomay Lake and was the main concession stand at the park. Bill initially joined First United Presbyterian Church in DePere, Wi., and later transferred to Preble Presbyterian in Green Bay. Bill served on the Sessions Board and many of the committees while at Preble, besides singing in the choir, Bill was very active in making pastoral calls to fellow parishioners.
Bill had several passions, he was an ardent collector of fine art and antiques. He very much enjoyed going to estate sales and auctions wherever he thought something looked interesting. He found it challenging to find a piece that was damaged, and to then find the craftsman that would restore it. Bill was very good at restoring furniture, when he found the time. Bill was a gourmet cook and enjoyed entertaining guests at his home. Bill was always quick with a joke, anecdote or catchy phrase to bring a smile to your face.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Charlotte A. Biersner, and a nephew, John P. Biersner.
Bill is survived by his brother-in-law Earl Biersner of Cedar Falls, Ia.; nephew Robert (Patricia) Biersner of Dike, Ia.; niece Ann Geiken of Dike, and Jane (Randall) Graham of Fairfax Station, Va; nephew Keith Biersner of Thornton, Co.; ten great-nephews and seven great-nieces.
Services 11:00 am, March 24th at the First United Presbyterian Church in DePere, Wi., with services in Dike pending.
