George C. Roberts Funeral Services Friday, Nov. 4

Funeral services for George C. Roberts, 44, were held at the United Methodist Church, Dike last Friday afternoon, Nov. 4th. Mr. Roberts passed away at the University Hospital in Iowa City following open heart surgery on Tuesday morning, Nov. 1, 1977, after having been a patient there for a week. He had attained the age of 44 years, 2 months and 15 days.

The Rev. James Hanke officiated at the 1:30 p.m. services. Music was provided by organist, Mrs. John Paige and pianist, Mrs. Duane Habben. They played several selections for the prelude, postlude and music interludes of "Does Jesus Care?" and "How Great Thou Art", as a duet.

Ushers were John Mulder, Byron Mulder, John Volberding and Albert Lauterbach. Friends who had charge of the floral arrangements were Mrs. Roger Davis, Mrs. John Volberding and Mrs. Lawrence Mark.

Casketbearers were Marlyn Biersner, Floyd Freese, Keith Klar, Robert Christensen, Gary Andersen and Robert Troy. Cars for the family were provided by John Paige, Hubert Kopriva, Roger Davis and Richard Juhl.

The Dike Funeral Chapel were in charge of the arrangements and held viewing at the Chapel Thursday afternoon and evening and Friday morning until the casket was taken to the church for viewing prior to the services.

Burial was in the Elmwood Cemetery, Dike.

George C. Roberts was born August 17, 1933 in Dike the son of Fred and Naomi Stubbs Roberts. He was a 1951 graduate of the Dike Community School and served in the United States Army as a paratrooper for two years. He was united in marriage to Doris Venenga on September 15, 1957 in Grundy Center. Mr. Roberts worked on milk routes in Dike and then started the Dike Sanitation service which he operated for several years. Along with the sanitation business he began working at John Deere Tractor Works where he had been employed for the past 12 years.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Dike Chamber of Commerce and Lions Club, American Legion Post #471, Danish Brotherhood Lodge #144, and Dike Volunteer Fire Department for 21 years.

He is survived by his wife, Doris; one son, Gregory, a senior student; one daughter, Dana, a seventh grade student both at home; his mother, Mrs. Naomi Roberts, Dike; and four sisters, Mrs. Melvin (Mary) Jans of Reinbeck, Mrs. John (Alice) Hernandez, Mrs. George (Helen) Eilers and Mrs. Jerry (Carol) Butler all of Waterloo. He was preceded in death by his father.

A memorial fund has been established.

A family noon dinner was served at the Community Hall of the Dike Memorial Building by the Grant Rebekah Lodge and the Methodist Prayer Group. Friends and relatives were invited to the church following burial for coffee, refreshments and a time of fellowship.
