Virgil Paige Services held

Virgil Allen Paige, 97, of Dike, died at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit, on Friday evening, September 5, where he had been a resident since December 5, 1994. His death was attributed to complications from age.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, September 8, from the Dike United Methodist Church at Dike with Pastor Rick Johnson officiating. Interment was in the Elmwood Cemetery, Dike.

A memorial fund is being established.

Born March 17, 1900, at Green Ridge, Missouri, he was the son of Charles and Rebecca Moore Paige. He received his schooling in the Green Ridge schools and grew to manhood near the area of his birth. He was inducted into the U.S. Navy during WWI. After receiving an honorable discharge, he came to Grundy Center in 1922.

On January 10, 1923, at Marshalltown, he was united in marriage to Myrtle Bloxham of Grundy Center. The couple resided at Dike where Mr. Paige operated an implement business, sales barn, cafe and tavern, retiring in 1965 to his farm.

Mr. Paige attended the United Methodist Church in Dike and was the the last Grundy County WWI veteran. He was an 80 year member of American Legion, presently being a member of American Legion Post #471 of Dike.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Myrtle in 1981; a son, Donald D.; his parents; 3 brothers; and 2 grandsons.

Surviving are 6 sons, Lawrence A. Paige of Reinbeck, Charles B. Paige of Breezy Point, Minnesota, John A. Paige of Dike, Vernon R. Paige of Askov, Minnesota, Clarence E. Paige of Waterloo and Wayne L. Paige of Dike; 28 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; and several more distant relatives.

The Hand Funeral Chapel in Reinbeck was in charge of the arrangements.
