Found Trapped Under Backhoe Support ...

Dike Town Employee Dies In Tractor Mishap Monday Noon

An employee of the town of Dike, Verner Sloth, 51, was killed Monday noon when he became trapped under the support of a tractor-mounted backhoe.

The mishap occurred at Elmwood cemetery near the south edge of Dike.

Apparently the tractor moved and caused the backhoe to slip off one of its supports, pinning Sloth underneath while he was digging at the cemetery.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Fredsville Evangelical Lutheran church, with Rev. Joseph Sibert officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.

The body may be viewed until 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Dike Funeral Chapel, who is in charge of arrangements. The body will then be taken to the Fredsville church for viewing prior to the service. The casket will not be open following the service.

Verner Sloth was born March 20, 1918 at Hudson the son of Christian and Christine (Nielsen) Sloth. He married Lilas Frenzen at the Fredsville church on Sept. 29, 1942. The couple farmed near Dike and then in 1962 moved to Dike. Mr. Sloth had been a Dike town maintenance employee since 1964.

He was a member of the Fredsville Lutheran Church and of the Dike Danish Brotherhood Lodge No. 144.

He is survived by his widow, Lilas; two daughters, Mrs. Raymond (Sandra) Benter of Muscatine and Bonnie, at home and a student at UNI; two brothers, Elvin and Gordon both of Dike; and one sister, Mrs. Erhart (Agnes) Anderson of Dike. He was preceded in death by his parents.
