Lilas Schmidt Services Held

Lilas M. Schmidt passed away Friday, January 21, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo of natural causes, having attained the age of 72 years, 9 months and 16 days.

Funeral services were held Monday, January 24, at Fredsville Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Cedar Falls at 2 p.m. with Pastor Steven Solberg officiating.

Pallbearers were Charles Knudsen, Kenneth Andersen, Gary Andersen, Darwin Cannegieter, Darrell Sloth and Dennis Sloth.

Burial followed in Elmwood Cemetery, Dike.

Memorials may be directed to the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home.

Lilas was born April 5, 1921, on a farm near Lincoln, the daughter of Albert and Mary (Posekany) Frenzen. She received her education in Dike Community Schools, graduating with the Class of 1938.

Lilas was united in marriage to Verner Sloth on September 29, 1942, at Fredsville Lutheran Church. Lilas and Verner farmed near Dike, and in 1962 moved into Dike. Mr. Sloth passed away September 29, 1969, and in 1971 Lilas married Soren Schmidt. He preceded Lilas in death in 1973 . Lilas was employed by the Barn Cafe in Dike from 1973 until 1991.

She was a member of Fredsville Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Cedar Falls and of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Dike Danish Sisterhood. Lilas made her home at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home in 1992 where she lived until the time of her death.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Verner Sloth; second husband Soren Schmidt; and by one infant brother.

Survivors include 2 daughters, Sandra Benter of Des Moines and Bonnie Raasch of Cedar Rapids; 1 step-daughter, Marilyn Kitts of Clinton; 2 step-granddaughters; and 2 sisters, Sylvia Knudsen of Waterloo, and Evelyn Cannegieter of Dike.

The Dike Funeral Chapel was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
