Rites Held For Russell Nielsen
Russell Emil Nielsen, of Dike, passed away Thursday, September 16, at the Western Home in Cedar Falls of natural causes, having attained the age of 87 years, 8 months, and 19 days.
Funeral services were held Monday, September 20, at Liberty Baptist Church in Dike at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Dennis Sanders officiating.
Pallbearers were his grandsons, Steve Schuler, Daniel Schuler, Michael Schuler, Chris Nielsen, Jason Nielsen, Andrew Nielsen and Jonathan Nielsen.
Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery, Dike.
Memorials may be directed to the Iowa State Commission for the Blind and to the Dike Library.
Russell was born November 28, 1905, in Dike the son of John and Alma (Petersen) Nielsen. He received his education in Dike. Russell was a custom corn sheller and photographer. He served in the United States Army during World War II.
On January 2, 1943, Russell was united in marriage to Rosemary Lucy Charvat in Chicago, Illinois.
He was a member of the Dike American Legion and the Danish Brotherhood.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Thelma A. Lynn; wife Rosemary on July 26, 1993; and by two sisters, Agnes Nielsen and Mildred Nielsen.
Survivors include one daughter, Pat Schuler and husband John of Janesville, WI; two sons, Charles and wife Diane Nielsen of Bettendorf, and Timothy and wife Margaret Nielsen of Dike; 13 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lois Bruns of Dike, and Alice Mae Roberts of Jackson, MN.
The Dike Funeral Chapel was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
