Gertrude Arends, 86

Gertrude Arends, 86, of Dike, died August 12 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Funeral services were August 16 at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church in rural Holland. Burial followed in the Elmwood Cemetery in Dike. A memorial fund has been established.

Gertrude was born June 2, 1917, in Grundy County, the daughter of Cornelius and Ella (Nieman) Jungling. She attended Iowa State Teachers College and taught country school for one year. On July 14, 1937, Gertrude was united in marriage to Marlyn Arends at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church Parsonage. The couple farmed in Grundy County and she and Marlyn resided there all of their lives. She was a member of Pleasant Valley Reformed Church in rural Holland. Gertrude enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by two sons; Duane Arends and his wife Holly of Parkersburg and Craig Arends and his wife Laurie of Dike; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one son, Larry; one grandson, Mark; four brothers, John, Ted, Oliver and Bill Jungling, and a sister, Mabel Bergman.
