Services Held Saturday For Merlin Hickey

Merlin D. Hickey of Dike passed away at 5:10 a.m. Thursday, January 8, at the Maple Manor Nursing Home in Aplington, where he had been a resident since November 12, 1986.

Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church, Dike, on Saturday, January 10, at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Shirley Textor officiated.

Craig DeBerg sang "The King Is Coming" and "The Old Rugged Cross." He was accompanied by Mrs. John Paige, who also played selected numbers for the prelude and postlude.

The casket bearers were Don Ferris, Cory Jansen, Mike Arends, Curt Johnson, William C. Bergman and Gerald Bruns.

The ushers were John Volberding and John Mulder. Mrs. Gerald Bruns and Mrs. Howard Bowers were in charge of the floral arrangements.

Interment was in Elmwood Cemetery, Dike.

Relatives and friends were invited to return to the church following the committal services for a period of Christian fellowship and refreshments.

Mr. Hickey was born April 18, 1905, at Tioga, the son of Charles and Hattie Myers Hickey. He attained the age of 81 years, eight months and 20 days.

He grew up at Rose Hill and attended the Rose Hill high school. As a young man, he started working for the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad.

On February 8, 1930, he was united in marriage to Thelma M. Fielder at Lancaster, MO. After their marriage, they lived in various communities in Iowa while working for the railroad as a Depot Agent, moving to Dike in 1946. He worked for the railroad for over 50 years. On December 30, 1967, his wife passed away.

On May 26, 1969, he was united in marriage to Elvera Scott Olson at Elk Point, SD. They made their home in Dike and on May 21, 1982, she passed away.

He continued to live in Dike until he went to Maple Manor in Aplington.

He was a member of the Dike United Methodist Church and a past member of the IOOF.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first and second wives, one son, Wilford, one grandson, Mark Arends, and by one sister.

He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Doris Schuck of Lanesboro, MN, Mrs. Dorla Arends of Dike and Mrs. Janice Buskohl of RR1, Dike; one brother, Archie Hickey of Sigourney; two sisters, Mrs. Helen Knoller of Delta and Mrs. Mildred Denburger of Oskaloose; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established.

The Dike Funeral Chapel in Dike was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
