Memorial Service For John Volberding

John Volberding of Dike, Iowa, passed away of natural causes on Friday, March 15, 1996, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, Iowa, having attained the age of 88 years, 9 months, and 8 days.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, March 23, 1996, at the United Methodist Church in Dike at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Rick Johnson officiating. Inurnment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery, Dike, Iowa, with military graveside rites conducted by the Dike American Legion Post #471. There will be no visitation. A memorial fund has been established.

Born June 7, 1907, in Grant Township, Grundy County, Iowa, John was the son of Herman F. and Minnie (Hempen) Volberding. He grew up in Grundy County, and graduated from Dike High School in 1927. John served his country during World War II with the Army Air Corps in the CBI (China-Burma-India) Theatre of War. On June 16, 1952, he was united in marriage to Maxine Vogel at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple made their home in Dike where John was employed from 1931-1941 for Chris Nelsen. He then purchased John's DX Station in Dike, which he operated until 1951 when he went to work as a letter carrier for the Dike Post Office, from which he retired in 1977.

John was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Dike, the American Legion, VFW, and the "40 and 8". He also served as a volunteer fireman in Dike for 47 years, was a member of the Iowa Fireman's Association, was a former member of the Chamber of Commerce, and had served two terms on the Dike Town Council.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Edward Volberding and one sister, Marie Reiter.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine of Dike; one daughter, Beth Wilson of Waterloo; one sister, Martha Wilson of Loveland, Colorado; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Volberding of Des Moines.

The Dike Funeral Chapel, Dike, Iowa, is in charge of the professional arrangements.
