The news of the death of Miss Esther Rathman last Friday morning came as a shock to this community although it was not entirely unexpected as her condition had been getting steadily worse for the past week or more. She had suffered from heart trouble for years, but it was only the past month or so that her condition was thought to be serious. Esther Alvina Maria Ratham, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Rathman, was born in Grant township, Grundy county, August 4, 1894, died August 22, 1919, at the age of 25 years, 18 days. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home, in charge of Rev. Grose of the Black Hawk church. Burial in Elmwood cemetery, Dike. She is survived by her father and mother, sister Clara and brother Elmer.
