Fall Injury Fatal to Ben Whitney

A New Hartford man, who suffered a skull fracture in a fall in Waterloo Friday afternoon, died at 10 a.m. yesterday at Veterans hospital, Iowa City.

Ben Whitney, 40, of New Hartford, who had been visiting a cousin, Ralph Whitney of 116 Forrester Ave., apparently became ill while at the Flamingo Tap, at Whitney Rd. and Conger St., police said.

After he reportedly fell over backwards at the Flamingo bar, a doctor, who was called, gave permission for Whitney to be sent to the home of his cousin at Forrester Ave. The cousin summoned Whitney's personal physician, who ordered him sent to Schoitz Memorial hospital, where he was found to have a skull fracture.

Whitney was taken from Schoitz hospital to Iowa City by Mount's Ambulance Service. There surgery was performed Friday night to remove a blood clot. He died yesterday morning.

Whitney, a veteran of World War II, had suffered an injury to his spine while in the service, a relative said, and had been ill for a long period of time.

Surviving are his father, Ben F. Whitney, 329 Rainbow Dr., Cedar Falls, who had been residing with him in New Hartford for about a year; two brothers, Max, New Hartford; Roger, Janesville and one sister, Mrs. Raymond Cox, Fairbank. His mother preceded him in death.

He was born in November of 1919 on a farm near Stout, Ia. He had farmed in Butler and Grundy counties. Following his service in World War II, he was employed at the Rath Packing Co. He had later farmed near New Hartford.

The body will arrive Sunday morning at the Dahl funeral home in Cedar Falls from Iowa City.

Funeral services will be at the Dahl funeral home at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be at Dike.
