Nichles Freese Dies Saturday at Home in Dike

Nichles Freese died at 9:15 Saturday at his home in Dike. Had he lived until the 18th of next month he would have been 84 years old. He spent his entire life in Grundy county. He had been in failing health during the past year.

The body was taken to the Engelkes Funeral Home in Grundy Center where funeral arrangements were made.

Funeral services were in the Methodist church in Dike Tuesday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. Harry Gleim. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery, Dike.

Mr. Freese was born on a farm in Lincoln township, Grundy county, October 18, 1875. He grew up on a Lincoln township farm. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Freese, among the early residents of Grundy county.

December 2, 1909, Nichles Freese and Dena Boike were married. They farmed several years in Lincoln township and then in Beaver township. In 1928 they retired from the farm and moved to the town of Dike where they spent the remainder of their lives. Mrs. Freese died January 1, 1940. On June 3, 1944, Mr. Freese was married a second time to Mary Anna Phelps, who survives.

Other surviving relatives are two sons and three daughters. The sons are C. E. from Dike and Vernon, Sacramento, Calif. There are three surviving daughters, Mrs. Henry Pruisner, Dike Mrs. Carolyn Johnson, Cedar Falls, and Mrs. Ralph Lovell, Dike. Also a step-daughter, Mrs. Arthur Smith, Washburn, Wis. Surviving also is one brother, John, Pipestone, Minn., and one sister, Mrs. Leo Pennington, of Wenatchee, Wis. There are 17 surviving grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
