Aplington Father, Son Crash Victims
An Aplington man, Fred Bert Abbas, 44, and his 19-year-old son, Eugene Fred Abbas, were killed and three other members of the family were injured when their car collided with a semi-trailer truck which had jackknifed across Highway 20 about 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday last week.
According to the accident report, the truck, driven by David Parmain, 25, of Siloam Springs, Ark., jackknifed on the icy highway just ahead of the Abbas car a quarter mile east of the Highway 65-20 junction near Iowa Falls.
Young Abbas was driving the car.
Injured were Mrs. Ana Mae Abbas, 41, and her two daughters, Frances, 17, and Beverly, 14. Mrs. Abbas was reported in critical condition at the Iowa Falls hospital. The driver and a passenger in the truck were not hurt.
Funeral services for the father and son were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at West United Methodist Church in Ackley followed by burial in Ackley Christian Reformed Church cemetery, four miles east of Ackley.
Survivors of Fred Abbas include his widow; three daughters, Mrs. Larry Smith of Iowa Falls, and Frances and Beverly, both at home; his mother, Mrs. Burt Abbas of Ackley; five sisters, Mrs. Alfred Gerdes of Gladbrook, Mrs. Ben VanHeiden of Reinbeck, Miss Lucille Abbas in Michigan, Mrs. George Bishop and Mrs. John H. Johnson, Aplington.
