Services Monday For Arend J. Abbas

Arend J. Abbas, age 55, of 1025 Dorothy Ave., Parkersburg, Iowa died at 10:15 a.m. Saturday at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. He had been suffering from lung cancer the past three months.

Arend John Abbas was born the son of Berend and Aafke Frerichs Abbas, April 10, 1920, in Grundy County, rural Ackley. He attended rural school and married Marian Pohlman, October 1, 1940, in her rural farm home near Ackley. After their marriage they lived and worked on a farm near Ackley until 1952 when they moved to western Iowa and Arend worked as a Breeding Technician. They lived in various towns in western Iowa and Minnesota until 1967 when they moved to Parkersburg, and Mr. Abbas was employed by the Fern Creamery for two years. Since 1969 he was employed at UNI as custodian of Dancer Hall, a girls dorm.

He is survived by his wife, Marian; one son, Ronald of Sioux Center, Iowa; two daughters, Sharon, Mrs. Roger Seehusen, Parkersburg, and Vicki, Mrs. George Striech, Minnetonka, Minn.; two sisters, Mrs. Tena Ludemann and Minnie, Mrs. John Betten, both of Grand Rapids, Michigan; and one brother, Rev. Cornelius Abbas, German Valley, Ill., and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Funeral services were at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Christian Reformed Church, Parkersburg, with Rev. Henry Lamsma, officiating. The vocalist was Mrs. Marlyn Allspach and organist was Mrs. Kenneth Johnson. Casketbearers were Jack DeGroot, Harold Kalkwarf, Herb Muller, Aldrich Kneppe, Donald Allspach, and Duane Anderson. Burial was in the Ackley Christian Reformed cemetery. Engelkes Funeral Home in Parkersburg was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
