Minnie Betten

Minnie Betten, 84, of Ackley, Iowa, died February 23, 1999 at the Presbyterian Village.

She was born Mach 31, 1914 in Ackley, the daughter of Ben and Effie Frerichs Abbas. She was a 1930 graduate of Ackley High School.

She married John (Jack) Betten, September 18, 1940 at her parents' farm southeast of Ackley.

She had been employed in food service at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Mrs. Betten was a member of the Ackley Christian Reformed Church, then the Methodist Church, played the piano and taught Sunday school, and was a member of the Grundy County Homemakers Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Rev. Corneiluis Abbas, Arend Abbas and one in infancy; two sisters, Henrietta Abbas and Remda Abbas; and one son-in-law, Richard Castle.

Survivors include: her husband, John, of Ackley; twins, Bernard Betten and his wife, Sandy, of Burlington, and Berniece Verbrugge and her husband, Glenn, of Cadillac, Michigan; daughters, Rozann Mueller and her husband, Ralph, of Wyoming, Michigan, Ada Castle of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Necia VanderWal and her husband, John, of Kentwood, Michigan; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Tena Brooks and her husband, Clair, of Grand Rapids, Michigan; and two sister-in-laws, Lenore Abbas of Freeport, Illinois, and Marian Seehusen of the Presbyterian Village in Ackley.

Funeral services were February 24 at the Ackley United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Smith, Rev. Ralph Mueller and Rev. Bruce Baillie officiating. Glenn Verbrugge served as the organist accompanying the duet of Sharon and Roger Seehusen.

Casketbearers were Jeff Betten, John Betten, Dan Bleeker, Rex Mueller, Randal Verbrugge and Russell Verbrugge.

Honorary casketbearer was Neil Knoll.

Interment will be in the Christian Reformed Cemetery of Ackley.

Memorials may be directed to the Christian Reformed Home Mission, 2850 Kalamazoo SE, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49560.

Brandt-Fritz Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
