Art Neessen, 55, Passes Away

"Art" Arthur Neessen, 55, of 400 State street, Dike, passed away very suddenly and unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 19. He had been admitted to Sartori hospital in Cedar Falls Saturday morning, and then transferred to Allen Memorial hospital in Waterloo at 5:40 p.m. He passed away at 7:10 p.m. of a massive internal hemorrhage.

Funeral services were to be held this past Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 in the United Methodist church, Dike. The Reverends Robert and Jo Hoover were to officiate.

Organist Mrs. John Paige played selected prelude and postlude numbers and played two organ interludes, "In the Garden" and "The Lord is My Shepherd."

Pallbearers were Floyd Barfels, Richard Froning, Merlin Menken, Cloyd Zeig, Vernon Conradi and Lester Kramer.

Flower attendants were Mrs. Alice Mayer and Mrs. Ben Clapp. Ushers were Jack Heritage, Russell Hohenberger and John Mulder.

Burial was in Elmwood cemetery, Dike, with graveside military services by Dike American Legion Post No. 471.

Arthur Neessen was born Oct. 16, 1918, at Wellsburg, Iowa, the son of Walter and Tisha Heikens Neessen. On Feb. 14, 1941, he married Eulalia Schulte in Windem, Minn. After their marriage they lived in Eldora for a year, and then he entered the armed services of World War II. The couple lived in California for a time while he was in the service there; he then left for overseas duty, while Mrs. Neessen continued to reside in California.

Upon his return from overseas they resided in Springfield, Ill., for 3 1/2 years while he was in the Springfield Veterans Hospital. In 1946 they moved to Dike where he was self-employed in the heavy construction business until 1967, when he went to work for Grundy County.

He was a member of the Dike American Legion Post and the Dike United Methodist church.

He is survived by his widow, Eulalia; two sons, Roger, Cedar Falls, and Darrell at home; one daughter, Hollie, at home; two brothers, Anton Neessen, Wellsburg, and Richard Neessen of rural Holland. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Dike Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
