Marguerite Neva Meyer, 98, of Waterloo, Iowa, passed away early Thursday morning, September 13, 2018 at Ravenwood Specialty Care in Waterloo, Iowa.
Marguerite was born on January 7, 1920, in Stout, Iowa, the daughter of Cornelius and Viola (Hersey) Meyer. In Stout and Wellsburg, Marguerite’s father farmed, managed a grain elevator and did carpentry work. Marguerite attended Stout, New Hartford and Wellsburg schools. In 1937, she graduated from Wellsburg High School and soon moved with her parents and brother to Waterloo, where her father worked at Rath Packing Company.
In 1938, Marguerite studied briefly at T.C.I. now U.N.I. to be a teacher, but she never taught school. She was employed at Hinson Manufacturing during World War II, and for 2 years in the 1940’s she worked in restaurants in California, and then returned to Waterloo for the rest of her adult life. She worked at Rath Packing in the 1950’s and part of the 1960’s. In May of 2000, Marguerite became a resident of Ravenwood Specialty Care.
She attended the Gospel Hall and other churches in Waterloo. She enjoyed needle work, gardening, and taking fishing and birding trips around Iowa with her only nephew, Greg, a real treat for her as she did not drive.
Never married, Marguerite is survived by her nephew, Greg Meyer of Waterloo, Iowa, and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, James Calvin Meyer, and twin siblings who died at birth in 1921.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, September 18, 2018, at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Shell Rock, with Russell Nesbit speaking. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery, New Hartford. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Monday, September 17, 2018, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Shell Rock. Memorials may be directed to Waterloo Gospel Hall. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Shell Rock is assisting the family.
