Mrs. Henry Sheller while on her return home from visiting the sick Saturday afternoon was suddenly stricken with apoplexy. She was immediately carried into the H. C. Sheller home whose place she and her daughter Frances were passing. A doctor was called but she did not rally and about 14 hours later passed away. Sunday forenoon soon after her decease, her body was taken to her home. Her daughter, Mrs. Ruth Heckman of Polo, Ill., reached here Sunday about noon. At present writing R. G. and D. D. Sheller have gone to Marshalltown to meet their brother Ernest whose home is in California.

Emma Sheller

Emma Gallagher Sheller was born in Carroll county, Illinois, January 22, 1859. With her parents she moved to Grundy county, Iowa, in 1865, where she resided ever since.

On December 20, 1876, her marriage to Henry S. Sheller took place. To this union were born ten children: Raymond G., Daniel D., LeRoy E., Glen, John, Frances, Henry and Lois of this vicinity, and Ernest M. of Raisin City, Cal., and Ruth Heckman of Polo, Ill. There are also nine grandchildren, four brothers, three sisters, one half-brother, one half-sister, one step-brother and a step-mother. For the most part the last nine years the step-mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Gallagher, lived in this home.

The present home is where their days of married life were spent. She has been a Christian from girlhood. Her early experience was with the Church of God. Since the first year after her marriage her church home has been with the Church of the Brethren, in which church she has a record of faithfulness in all the departments of church activity. Her constant serving of others revealed her sterling Christian attitude. In the many duties as a mother and homekeeper she was much given to being cheerful and singing devotional songs, one of her favorites being "Shall We Gather at the River?"

The concern for her family was most marked also by considering each child with the highest regard for eternal welfare by continual entreating as a parent can to Christian loyalty. What a legacy this is to any child as he or she recalls the parent's guardianship to the high and important phases of life.

January 27, as she was returning home from visiting the sick, there came upon her a sudden illness, which proved to be near the end of her life here. The next morning, as others were entering the duties of the Lord's day, she passed into the realm beyond, aged 58 years and 6 days.

"Life's race is run,
Life's work well done,
Life's crown well won,
Now comes rest."

Funeral services were conducted in the Ivester church house Thursday at 1:30 and burial in the Melrose cemetery, two miles north of Ivester.

"Oh, mother, when I think of thee,
'Tis but a step to Calvary;
Thy gentle hand upon my brow
Is leading me to Jesus now."

"Mother, dear, sacred name, and sweet;
How slow we are to prove
The height and depth and deathlessness
Of perfect mother love.
We take her tender daily care,
Just as thoughtless as flowers,
Look up to God for daily light,
Because we know 'tis ours.
But when we miss from heart and life
The comfort of her care;
Then we must learn to live without
Her presence and her prayer.
'Tis then the name of mother
To us is a holy thing,
And hovering low we seem to feel
The shelter of a wing."
