Death Removes Old Settlers of Grundy Co.

Mrs. H. E. Slifer Passes Away Monday Of This Week At A Ripe Old Age

57 Years in Grundy County

Amanda Hoffa, daughter of Jacob and Sarah Hoffa, was born in Northumberland county, Pennsylvania, Mar. 20th, 1842, and passed away at her home in Grundy Center, Iowa, Feb. 5th, 1923, aged 80 years, 10 months and 15 days.

When a child she moved with her parents to a farm in Ogle county, Ill., and was there united in marriage to Henry E. Slifer in 1864. Two years later they moved to Iowa and located in Melrose township, Grundy county, ten miles southwest of Grundy Center, living there until 1906, when they moved to Grundy Center.

To this union were born ten children, of whom three are living: Jacob H. and Mary, of Grundy Center, and William E. of Burlington, Iowa.

Besides the above children there are left to mourn her death an aged husband, four sisters and three brothers: Mrs. Mary Rhodermel, Marshalltown; Mrs. Emerilla Rhodermel, Shannon, Ill.; Mrs. Minnie Garman, Chicago; Mrs. Ida Earlenbaugh, Freeport, Ill.; John Hoffa, Kalamazoo, Mich.; Jake Hoffa, Shannon, Ill.; and Will Hoffa, Grand Island, Neb. There are also five grandchildren and two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Jacob Slifer, this city, and Mrs. Wm. E. Slifer, Burlington, Iowa.

Mrs. Slifer was an every day Christian and her life and character was spotless and charming as was ever possessed by any good wife and mother who had gone before her. She will be greatly missed, not only in the home, but among neighbors and friends among whom she was always held in the highest respect.

Following brief prayer services at the home funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 6th, at one o'clock p.m., at the Ivester Brethren church, of which Mrs. Slifer had been a life-long member, Rev. I. D. Leatherman, Pastor, officiating, and interment was in the Sheller cemetery near Ivester.
