Rites Held For Anna Penning
Mrs. Anna E. Penning of the Grundy Care Center passed away on Tuesday, May 3. She attained the age of 94 years, 5 months, 18 days.
Funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center at 10:30 a.m. on May 6 with Pastor Wesley R. Harker officiating.
Merle Mamminga sang "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "Going Down The Valley." He was accompanied by Mrs. Raymond Hinders who also played selected numbers for the prelude and postlude.
Casket bearers were Rick Penning, Calvin Kiewiet, Roger Kiewiet, Kenneth Kiewiet, Bill Ash, Terry Penning, Scott Jans, Daryl Jans, Brian Kiewiet, Curtis Kiewiet, Steve Kiewiet, Gary Kiewiet, Alan Kiewiet, Dean Penning and Curtis Penning.
Ushers were Floyd Rouse and George Hauser. Mrs. Ernest Blythe and Mrs. Paul Slinker were in charge of the floral arrangements.
Interment was in the Colfax Center Cemetery, rural Holland.
Anna E. Penning was born Nov. 15, 1893, on a farm south of Grundy Center in Grundy County, the daughter of Nies and Margaret DeVoogdt. She grew up on a farm south of Grundy Center. Later her family moved to Glenvil, NE, where she lived for 2 years and then came back to Grundy Center.
On December 15, 1915, she was united in marriage to John Penning at the Colfax Center Church parsonage. After their marriage, they farmed in the Dike and Grundy Center area till 1931 when they moved and made their home in Grundy Center. Her husband, John, passed away on May 16, 1935.
After the death of her husband, she cared for elderly people in their homes in both Wellsburg and in Grundy Center. Before becoming a resident of the Grundy Care Center on Nov. 16, 1987, she had lived in the Senior Citizen Housing in Grundy Center.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 5 half-sisters, and 1 half-brother.
She is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs. Minerdena Grimmius and Mrs. Jake (Elsie) Kiewiet, both of Grundy Center; 1 son, Vernon Penning, of Wellsburg; 1 half-sister, Mrs. Armea Lay of Glenvil, NE; 6 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial fund has been established.
The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
