Melissa R. Engelkes, 48, of Wellsburg, died September 13 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 16, at Wellsburg Reformed Church. Burial will follow at Hazelgreen Cemetery, rural Ackley. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg. Visitation will also be on Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m. The family will be present Wednesday evening. A memorial fund has been established.

Melissa was born March 25, 1956, in Grundy Center, the daughter of Donald and Louise (Schmidt) Ross. She received her education in the Wellsburg School System and graduated from Wellsburg High School in 1974. On July 26, 1974, Melissa was united in marriage to Eugene Engelkes at the Wellsburg Reformed Church. After their marriage, they farmed outside of Wellsburg for 12 years. In 1986, they moved to Wellsburg. Melissa sold Home Interiors and Gifts for 16 years and did so until 1994, when she had to quit due to health reasons. Melissa was a lifelong member of Wellsburg Reformed Church. She had been a past board member of the Wellsburg Community Club, and was also a member of the Smokey Ridge Muzzleloaders. She loved to golf and to camp.

She is survived by her husband, Eugene "Gene" Engelkes of Wellsburg; two sons, Bret Engelkes and his wife Daniela of Maurice and David Engelkes of Wellsburg; two daughters, Kelly Jean Engelkes of Marion, IN, and Lindsey Engelkes of Orange City; her mother, Louise Ross of Wellsburg; two brothers, Ron Ross and his wife Kathy of Grundy Center and Bill Ross and his wife Claudia of Des Moines; and one sister, Ioleta Blakely of Council Bluffs.

She was preceded in death by her father, Donald Ross.
