Ruth Viola Arends

Ruth Viola Arends was born August 20, 1917 to Dick and Anna Arends in Britt. She was baptized June 5, 1918. At an early age she moved with her family to the family farm four miles southeast of Ackley. It was there she attended the nearby country school. She graduated from Ackley High School in 1935.

Ruth attended the East Friesland Presbyterian Church and became a member on January 18, 1942. On June 12, 1960, she and Leonard Buss were united in marriage at East Friesland Presbyterian Church and first established their home in Sheffield. After one year they moved to Hampton where she continued to reside until her death. In 1962, she transferred her membership to the United Methodist Church of Hampton. In 1966, Mr. Buss died of a heart attack.

Ruth enjoyed a variety of activities as her health permitted, among them were bowling, gardening, flowers, traveling and music, including her playing of the organ.

Mrs. Buss passed away Tuesday, May 13 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Evelyn Freeseman of Parkersburg; two brothers, Arnold and his wife, Helen, of Wellsburg and Donald and his wife, Verjean of Ackley; two step-sons, Frank Buss of Sheffield and Jerry Buss of Illinois; ten nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 16 at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Presbyterian Church with Rev. Tim Diehl officiating. Mrs. Virgil Heetland was organist and singers were Mrs. Merlyn Bangasser and Mrs. Gordon Fritz. Henry Akkerman and Irvin Stubbe were ushers and pallbearers were Brian Arends, Ronald Arends, James Keppler, Gordon Freeseman, DeLaine Freeseman, Glenn Freeseman and Ross Enabnit. Interment was in the East Friesland Cemetery. The Brandt-Fritz Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
