George H. Geerdes, 82
George H. Geerdes, 82, of Grundy Center, died March 16 at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center in Marshalltown. Funeral services were March 19 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Grundy Center. Burial followed at Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown with full military honors. A memorial fund has been established.
He was born July 10, 1919 in Wellsburg, son of Henry A. and Alberdena M. (Neessen) Geerdes. He graduated from Wellsburg High School. He was a veteran of WWII serving from 1941 until 1945 with the U.S. Army as a Staff Sergeant. He was in the Normandy Operation. The French Government recently gave him a citation for his participation in the Normandy Invasion. On July 22, 1950 he was united in marriage to Connie Jacobson in Hampton. George sold cars for Herman Ibelings in Grundy Center before he became a State Farm Insurance Agent working in the Grundy Center area until retiring in 1986. In 1996 George moved to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. George was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the America Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Connie; three sons, Bradley Tyrell of Garden City, and Mark Geerdes and Gary Geerdes both of Wellsburg; two daughters, Gaye and her husband Les Muller of Grundy Center and Lynn Geerdes of Chicago, IL; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Henry D. Geerdes of Cedar Falls and Clarence Geerdes and his wife Nelda of Wellsburg; a sister, Helen and her husband Arnold Arends of Wellsburg; and many nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents; infant twin sons; a son, Henry "Hank" Geerdes; and a brother, Arthur Geerdes.
