Emma Hess, 91, Pipestone, died Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at Ashton Care Center, Pipestone.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 27, at 1 p.m. at Peace United Methodist Church, Pipestone, with Rev. Leonard Haggin officiating.
Casket bearers will be her grandchildren.
Interment will be in New Woodlawn Cemetery, Pipestone.
Edith Emma Hess was born to Glen and Ruth (Schwab) Sheller on August 26, 1917 in Melrose Township of Grundy County, Iowa, where she was raised and attended country school. She then attended high school in Wellsburg, Iowa. After her high school graduation in 1935, she continued her education at Cedar Falls Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Upon completion of her education, she taught for four years in Melrose Township.
She married Wayne Hess on June 2, 1940 at the Ivester Church of the Brethren in Grundy County, Iowa. Following their marriage, they farmed near Ihlen. In 1945, they moved to Grundy County, Iowa and in 1947, they returned to farm in Pipestone County. After Wayne retired from farming, they continued to live on the farm. In November 1996, they moved into Pipestone.
Wayne preceded her in death on July 1, 2000. After his death she remained in Pipestone. In January 2007 she became a resident of the Ashton Care Center.
She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in rural Pipestone where she was active in the Ladies Aid and the Couples Club and where she taught adult Sunday school for many years. She was also active in the Sweet Township Extension Club.
She is survived by her six children, Myrna (George) Huisken, Camarillo, Calif.; Marlys (Lyle) Buddenhagen, Tracy; Curtis (Megan) Hess, Pipestone; LaVonne “Bonnie” (Jack) Bucher, Pipestone; Joyce Ripley, Omaha, Neb., and Duane (Janelle) Hess, Pipestone; 17 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Myrtle Morland, Pueblo, Colo., and ImoJean (Merlin) Frantz, McPherson, Kans.; and one sister-in-law, Velma Sheller, Marshalltown, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one grandchild, Carl; one great-grandchild, Bradley; one brother, Charles Sheller and one sister, Doris “Dorie” Sheller.
