Military Rites Honor Lowell Aalfs

Lowell Mark Aalfs of Ames, Iowa, formerly of Wellsburg, Iowa, passed away May 23, 1996, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center, having collapsed at work. He had reached the age of 47 years, 10 months, and 4 days.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 28, 1996, at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg, Iowa, with the Reverend Gary Olson officiating. Interment was at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg, Iowa, with the Parkersburg American Legion Post #285 providing full military honors at the graveside.

Honorary pallbearers were Jim Gunning and Lou Mitchell. Pallbearers were Kenny Adams, Jim Everts, LaMoine Harms, Steve O'Brian, Sid Slifer, and Craig Turner.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Born July 19, 1948, in Eldora, Iowa, Lowell was the son of Lawrence "Sonny" and Margaret Alter Aalfs. Lowell grew up on a farm in Grundy County near Wellsburg, Iowa, with his two brothers, Lee and Loren Aalfs. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian Faith in the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in rural Wellsburg. Lowell received his education in the Wellsburg High School, graduating in the Class of 1967.

After high school, Lowell entered the United States Marine Corps and was stationed in Japan. His primary duty was with the aircrew rescue after a plane crashed on the runway. Lowell was honorably discharged after four years. He moved back home to Wellsburg and continued his education. After graduating from Ellsworth Junior College in Iowa Falls, Iowa, he received his BS Degree in Chemistry at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Lowell went on working ten years for John Deere in Waterloo, Iowa. For the past twelve years, Lowell was working at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, as a Fire, Safety, and Environmental Inspector for 118 Agron Lab.

Lowell had several hobbies. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and photography. Recently, he had started a collection of old farm and barn scenes that he had become enthusiastic about.

Lowell is survived by his parents, Lawrence "Sonny" and Margaret Aalfs of Parkersburg, Iowa; two brothers, Lee Aalfs of Parkersburg, Iowa, and Loren Aalfs and wife, Deb, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and two nieces, Melissa and Miekka Aalfs; and two nephews, Tyler and Quinn Aalfs.

The Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg, Iowa, was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
