Grace Bachman was born August 4, 1904 to Herman and Mary Badje Snittjer in Grundy County. She attended school at Wellsburg and was in the first graduating class. On February 12, 1931, she married Raymond McDowell. She operated telephone offices in Wellsburg and Steamboat Rock. On March 20, 1953, she married Raymond Bachman. In 1970, she retired from the Eldora Training School where she was a switchboard operator. She was a member of the Christian Church of Disciples and C.W.F.
In 1986, she moved from Eldora to Ackley. She was a member of Jolly Elders.
She is survived by one son, Larry McDowell of Iowa Falls; five grandchildren, Steve McDowell, Rick McDowell, Julie Folkerts of Ackley, Jill McDowell of Spirit Lake, and Jim McDowell of Steamboat Rock; eight great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Ray Snittjer of Ackley, Herman Snittjer of Theodosia, MO; and two sisters, Neva Cockerham of Ackley, and Minnie Juhl of Reinbeck.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and grandson.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Jan. 5 at 10:30 a.m. at the Christian Church of Disciples in Eldora with Rev. Sendel Barr officiating. Mrs. Peter DeCook was organist. Serving as pallbearers were Steve McDowell, Rick McDowell, Jim McDowell, Todd Folkerts, Art Thompson and Randy Juhl. Interment was in the Steamboat Rock Cemetery. The Brandt-Fritz Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
