Mrs. Earl Smith Dies In California

Mrs. Minnie Smith, wife of Dr. Earl Smith, died at Glendale, Calif., about 6 o'clock Friday morning. She was stricken with a heart attack during the night and death came a few hours later. While she had been afflicted with high blood pressure a number of years, she had been in fairly good health up to the time she was stricken; she was 65 years old on May 18th of this year.

Mrs. Smith was one of eight daughters of the late Mr. and Mrs. Asjen Freese. She was born in Grundy county and grew up here. Her maiden name was Minnie Freese. She was the youngest of the family.

Minnie Freese and Earl Smith were married in Cedar Rapids 44 years ago. He was taking a course in dentistry at the State University at the time. After completing his dental course the couple moved to George, Iowa, where Dr. Smith opened a dental office and continued his practice there until last year. Dr. and Mrs. Smith have a summer home at Lake Okoboji and their winters they have been spending at Glendale, Calif., where their only child and daughter, Mrs. Arthur Krause, resides.

The body was sent by plane from California to Kansas City and from there to Iowa Falls by plane. It arrived at Iowa Falls on Monday morning and was brought to the Coffman-Ferree chapel. Dr. Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Krause came here with the body.

Funeral services were held at the funeral chapel Tuesday afternoon. The service was conducted by Rev. Van Putten, pastor of the First Presbyterian church and Rev. F. J. Langenberg, Bethany Presbyterian church pastor. Dr. and Mrs. Smith were members of Rev. Langenberg's church while he was pastor at George. Burial was in the Grundy Center cemetery.

Surviving members of the family are the husband and daughter; three sisters, Mrs. Lee Koser, Grundy Center, Mrs. Lena Poppenga, Wellsburg, and Mrs. Chas. Biebesheimer, Grundy Center.

Relatives and friends from a distance who attended the funeral service were: Mort Smith, Sr., of Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. Mort Smith Jr., Windom, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Bob Kline, Spirit Lake; Mr. and Mrs. Glen Olson, Spencer; Dr. and Mrs. J. F. Biebesheimer, Mason City; Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Ingersoll, Mason City; Mr. and Mrs. Waldo Dierks and Mrs. Fred Bender, Spencer; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kuhl and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Thomas of Clinton; Mrs. Anna Klipping and Odell Klipping of Freeport, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Diercks of Davenport; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hatch, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Manuel, Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Locker, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Korthals, Mrs. Chas. Fitzgerald, and C. C. Crawford, all of George; Mrs. Fred Marschall, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Creglow, and Wm. Haan, all of Rock Rapids; Mrs. Ralph Whitney of Waterloo; Mrs. Maude Springer and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Springer of Toledo; Mrs. B. H. Rorem of Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. John Diercks, Mr. and Mrs. John Boven and Miss Susie Frerichs, all of Bristow.
