H. S. Beckman Died Last Sunday In California

Herbert S. Beckman, who was born in Grundy Center seventy-eight years ago last May, and who spent a large portion of his active life here, died in Pomona, Calif., Sunday afternoon. He was afflicted with a heart ailment which was the cause of his death.

He was born May 29, 1865, in the house in Grundy Center directly east and across the street from the First Presbyterian church. The house is now owned by his brother, Dr. F. S. Beckman. There were five children in this family and all but the oldest were born and grew up in that house.

Herbert Beckman graduated from Cornell college at Mt. Vernon. After finishing school he was given a place in the Grundy County National Bank. He was continually associated with that bank until he sold his interests and left here about 30 years ago. During most of the years that he was in this bank he served as cashier and as president. After leaving Grundy Center he went to California. About a year later he became associated with the Seaside National Bank at Long Beach until 1932, when the bank was liquidated. He continued to make his home in California.

Mr. Beckman was twice married. His first wife died in Grundy Center thirty-two years ago. There was one son named Carl from this marriage. Mr. Beckman married a second time about a year after he moved to California. This wife, the son, and two grandchildren survive. Other surviving relatives are his brother and the youngest of the family, Dr. F. S. Beckman of Grundy Center, and one sister, Mrs. Augusta Butler of Waterloo. The brothers who preceded him in death were Otto Beckman, the oldest of the family, and Dr. Hessel Beckman, who was a surgeon in the Mayo clinic at Rochester at the time of his death. The father, who was among the early residents of Grundy county, died in 1881. The mother died 13 years ago.

The mausoleum in the Grundy cemetery belongs to the Beckman family. Among the members of the family who are buried there are the father and mother, the two sons, Otto and Hessel, and a son-in-law, Frank Butler.

The body of Herbert Beckman is on the way to Grundy Center and it will be laid in its last resting place by the side of other members of the family in the mausoleum. Funeral services were held in Pomona, Calif., today. There will be no burial service at Grundy Center.
