William "Billy" Dean Getting, 80, of rural Clemons, passed away on Friday, April 21, at the Iowa River Hospice Home, in Marshalltown, Iowa. A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. until Noon at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, in Grundy Center. A private family graveside service will be at the Lincoln Center Cemetery.
Bill is the son of John and Milda (Schulta) Getting born on March 27, 1937 in Grundy Center, Iowa. He attended Grundy Center schools and then enlisted in the United States Navy. He was particularly proud of his training as a Navy Seabee, during his time in the service. He was stationed in Korea.
He married Linda J. McCoy and they raised four children: Danny Richard, Robert Edward, Jennifer Lynn, now deceased, Gareck Donald, and Pamela Kay, now deceased. During their marriage, they lived in Grundy Center, Holland, and Lake Havasu City, AZ. Linda passed away on November 28, 2008 from injuries sustained in a car accident.
On November 5, 2012, he married Karla Ridpath at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He gained four more children and nine grandkids who he loved beyond compare. They lived on a little acreage near Clemons, where Bill enjoyed tinkering in the metal shop and the wood shop. He was always busy with the yard, or "fixing" things (Billyrigging it's called out here). Fishing was his favorite pastime and he and Karla spent many evenings drowning worms off the Marietta Creek Bridge. Many good fish stories came from those evenings.
"Wild Bill" loved life and all of its experiences. He made sure that his bucket list was always empty. He rode his motorcycle "in the barrel", raced go carts, drove semis for several trucking companies, as well as his wife's trucking company, Bill also ran tower cranes and other heavy equipment. His "hobbies" included, riding motorcycles…very fast, owning and flying his ultralight aircraft, fishing and spending time with his family, telling us all of his many escapades. He loved to play cards, especially when he won. He also loved taking the grandkids sledding in the backyard behind the golf cart or skid loader.
Those whose lives he has changed forever and are left behind to mourn are his wife Karla of Clemons, Iowa; children Danny (Penny) Getting of Kansas City, Kansas, Robert (Doreen) Getting of Grundy Center, Iowa, and Gareck Donald Getting of Grundy Center, Iowa; step-children Kris Harris-Hull (Jason Hull) of Fairfield, Iowa, Jeni (Ron) Christensen of Marshalltown, Iowa, Jeremy (Sara) Harris of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Megan Cross of Union, Iowa; 17 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; several aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents; his wife Linda; two daughters; his younger brother Bobby Getting; and several aunts and uncles.
Family requests no flowers. Memorials may be directed to the family.
