Beaman G.I. Is Killed Friday In Vietnam Action

A 1967 graduate of Beaman-Conrad Community School, Sgt. Randy L. Mast, 21, was killed in action Friday by a booby trap while on patrol with U.S. Army forces in Cambodia.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Mast of Marshalltown, former residents of Beaman.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Estel-Perrin Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Tentative plans call for the remains to be returned Friday.

Sgt. Mast entered the Army on February 11, 1969, and had been in South Vietnam and Cambodia since February 19 of this year.

He received his basic training at Fort Polk, La., and completed the field artillery non-commissioned officer course at Fort Sill, Okla., prior to being sent overseas.

He was born September 27, 1948, in Marshalltown, and was graduated in 1967 from Beaman-Conrad high school, where he was active in wrestling and football. He attended a data processing school in Kansas City, and was employed for 18 months by a Cedar Rapids bank prior to entering the service.

Sgt. Mast was a member of the Beaman United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his parents, two sisters, Glenda Faye of Woodward and Melidy Ann, at home; a brother, Richard Ray, also at home; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John H. Mast, Beaman; and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Everett Williams, Marshalltown.
