Obituary of Mae Albright

Mae Albright was born October 19, 1881, to Jacob and Barbara Delp Albright of Grundy county, Iowa. She was the youngest of eleven children and the last survivor of her immediate family. She died in Bridgewater, Va., on February 11, 1975, in her ninety-fourth year.

As a young woman, she attended schools in Grundy county and pursued further studies at Bethany Bible School in Chicago, Ill., and at Bridgewater College in Virginia. While attending these schools, she engaged in home mission work for the Church of the Brethren with the Chinese Community in Chicago and the Mount Bethel Congregation of the Church of the Brethren in Virginia. Her interest in the missions program of the church continued throughout her life and was expressed through a period of special service in St. Joseph, Mo., and in a life-long philanthropic association with such institutions as Prentiss Institute, McPherson College, Bethany Theological Seminary, Bethany Hospital, the Heifer Project, and the General Brotherhood Board at various congregations of the Church of the Brethren in which she held membership.

In addition to her institutional philanthropies, she was the benefactress of numerous individuals for whom she made higher education a possibility.

After the period of formal education and service to the church, Mae returned to Grundy county, Iowa, where she made her home until 1947 when she moved to McPherson, Kansas. In 1968 she returned to Bridgewater, Va., and resided there until her death.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, with many of whom she shared a special relationship of continuous family interest, service, and care throughout three generations. The particular maternal relationship which she maintained with the four children of her brother Noah culminated in their formal adoption, and they survive as her children. They are William P. Albright of Bridgewater, Va., Patricia Messamer of Glendale, Ariz., Avis Speaker of Phoenix, Ariz., and Ardys Sutphin of Elizabethtown, Pa.

Funeral services were held in Bridgewater, Va., where she was a member of the Mount Bethel Church of the Brethren and in Ivester Church of the Brethren, Grundy Center, Iowa, where she had been a member for most of her adult life. Burial was in Sheller Cemetery.
