Eleanor “Elly” Faye Peters, age 85, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the daughter of Henry and Elsie Johanna (Lutterman) Ascher, Jr. on December 26, 1928, in rural Wellsburg, Iowa. Elly graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1947. While in high school, Elly’s first job was at Schuck’s Café. During her junior and senior years, Elly worked for John Behnke.
On September 11, 1948, Elly married Harvey Louis Peters at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, rural Wellsburg. The first few months after their marriage, they lived with Harvey’s parents and then they moved to a farm in Grundy County near Stout. At this time, Elly sold Tupperware. After farming for 13 years, they moved to Parkersburg and she worked for Dr. Floyd Rolfs and Dr. Gary Tiegland. In 1978, Elly opened the The Stitchery which she owned and operated for 27 years.
Elly was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church as well as Circle Ruth. She loved taking motorcycle trips with Harvey and square dancing at the Circle R. Elly enjoyed and was very gifted in quilting and sewing. She made many friends while teaching them to quilt. Most of all, Elly loved spending time with her family.
Elly died Monday, April 28, 2014, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center, Iowa. She is preceded in death by her parents, two grandchildren, Sarah Marie Johnson and Christopher Wayne Johnson; one sister, LeAnn Harken and one brother, Harold “Bud” Ascher.
Elly is survived by her husband of 65 years, Harvey; three daughters, Nancy (Bob) Meinders of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Peggy (Jim) Doeden of Ankeny, Iowa, and Julie, (Wes) Johnson of Lacey, Washington; three grandchildren, Eric (Jennifer) Meinders, Ryan (Jennifer) Amble, and Dan Amble; four great-grandchildren, Ben and Natalie Meinders, Ashleigh and Brady Amble; and one sister, Linda Riebeth of Littleton, Colorado.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg.
Visitation will be one hour before services on Tuesday. Memorials may be directed to American Cancer Society.
