Wilma Elizabeth Cornelius, age 87, formerly of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the daughter of Ebbo and Henrietta (DeVogd) Maas on December 1, 1927, in Waterloo, Iowa. Wilma was baptized and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church. She graduated from Janesville High School in 1945. After graduation, Wilma worked at Rath Packing Cafeteria and Wonder Bread.
On March 10, 1947, Wilma was united in marriage with Marvin Cornelius in the parsonage of Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg. After their marriage, Wilma and Marvin lived between New Hartford and Parkersburg where they farmed until their retirement in 1975. Wilma continued to live on the farm until 2009.
Wilma was a member of Reformed Church of Stout. She enjoyed sewing and gardening, then canning and freezing the produce from her garden. Wilma would always make room at the table for anyone who would stop in and she was always happy to babysit her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great-grandchild. Wilma and Marvin enjoyed their fishing trips to Minnesota and the times they wintered in Arizona. Spending time with her family was Wilma’s greatest joy.
Wilma died Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center, Iowa. She is preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Marvin on October 30, 1991; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Cornelius; two sons-in-law, Daryl Meyer and David Lyle Postel; her parents; three brothers, John, Harry and Pete Maas and two sisters, Grace Bruns and Florence Redenius.
Wilma is survived by six children, Gary Cornelius of Cedar Falls, Lois (Dennis) Rindels of Dike, Nancy Cornelius of Clear Lake, Daryl (Rhonda Allen) Cornelius of Parkersburg, Bev (Daniel Murray) Cornelius of Grundy Center and Cindy (Daniel) Bush of Grundy Center; 26 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister-in-law, Charlotte Maas of Shell Rock.
Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 29, 2015, at the Reformed Church of Stout in Stout, Iowa, with burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg, Iowa.
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg and one hour before services at the church.
Memorials may be directed to the Reformed Church of Stout or the family of Wilma Cornelius.
