Mrs. E. H. Dirks Died Monday At The Hospital
Mrs. E. H. Dirks, who resided in Grundy county for 68 years, died at the Marshalltown hospital at eight o'clock Monday morning from uremic poisoning. While her health had not been good for several years, it was only during the past month that her condition became serious. She was taken to the hospital for treatment last Friday, but there was nothing that specialists there could do other than to give her slight temporary relief.
A short funeral service will be held at the home in Grundy Center at 1 o'clock Thursday. Later there will be service at the Colfax Presbyterian church. Rev. George Swalve, the local pastor, will have charge of the services. He will preach in English. Former pastor J. E. Drake will deliver a sermon in German. Burial will be in the Drake church cemetery.
Harmkea S. Dirks, nee Saathoff, was born October 29, 1866, in Shannon, Illinois, and came to Grundy county, Iowa, in 1868 where she had always lived.
She was married to her now bereaved husband, E. H. Dirks, on March 13, 1884, by Rev. B. Vanderlas. They journeyed together for more than 52 years. She and her husband joined the Holland Presbyterian church 50 years ago.
Their union was blessed with four children. One little girl died in infancy and the youngest son, Cornelius, 33 years old, died 5 years ago.
She leaves beside her bereaved husband, one son, John, an only daughter, Annie, Mrs. Andrew Franken and a son-in-law, Andrew Franken, a daughter-in-law, Ella Dirks, and six grandchildren, besides many other relatives and friends.
She died at the Marshalltown hospital after long suffering on August 17 at 8 a.m., attaining the age of 69 years, 9 months and 19 days.
