Mrs. Bert Hillygus Dies; Ill 5 Years

Mrs. Bert Hillygus died at her home in Grundy Center Sunday morning. She had been an invalid for the past five years. The last ten weeks she was confined to her bed. She was 63 years old.

Funeral services were held at the home at one o'clock Wednesday afternoon and later at the Christian Reformed church at Holland, with the local pastor, Rev. Paul Holtrop, officiating. Burial was in the Colfax Presbyterian church cemetery.

Was Born in Grundy County
Mrs. Hillygus spent all of her life in Grundy county. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Poppe Poppenga. She was born on a Colfax township farm Nov. 16, 1882, and grew up there. The family lived in the town of Holland for some time. She was married to Bert Hillygus Sept. 2, 1900. They lived on a Colfax township farm after their marriage for 32 years. In 1933 they moved to Grundy Center where they remained.

She is survived by her husband, seven children: Mrs. Elizabeth Peters of Dike; Bert Hillygus of Waterloo; Lee Hillygus of Waterloo; Robert Hillygus of Marshalltown; Mrs. Clara Byrnes, Conrad; Allan Hillygus of Conrad; and Glen Hillygus, CPM, U.S.N.; 21 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one sister, Mrs. Svend Nelson of Fairmont, Minn.

Preceded in death by her parents, one brother, four children in infancy, one son, Cornelius, in 1924, and a daughter, Marion, in 1934.
