Geerd Groenewald
Geerd Groenewald, age 91, hanged himself in the parlor of his home in northern Colfax township sometime Saturday morning, having fixed a hook in the ceiling, tied the rope around his neck, and stepped from a chair. He was found hanging from the rope by his nine year old grandson about eleven o'clock, and the rash act had been committed between nine o'clock, when he was last seen alive and eleven o'clock, when the body was found.
The old man was always of a cheerful disposition, and was one of the witnesses in the Frerichs trial last fall, despite his advanced age. He lived in a small house adjoining his son's house on the Colfax township farm.
He leaves four children, John and Henry, Mrs. Geo. Kramer, of South Dakota, and Mrs. Otto Reinders, of Lennox, S.D. The funeral service was held Tuesday from the Drake church.
Walter Miller, acting coroner, held an inquest, and the jury found Mr. Groenewald came to his death by his own hands. No cause for his act has been found.
