Henry Sitters, Oldest Resident, Died Sunday
Henry Sitters, the oldest person residing in Holland, and a long-time resident of the town and community, died at his home here at 8:45 Sunday night. He was 88 years old on the 12th of last May. He had been in failing health the past few years, due to his advanced age. He had an attack of the flu last December which took much of his strength that he never regained. It was a weak heart that brought on the end Sunday evening.
Funeral services will be at the home Thursday afternoon and later at the Lutheran church in Holland, with the local pastor, the Rev. Peter Ilgen, officiating. Burial will be beside the wife in the Holland cemetery.
Mr. Sitters was born in Ostfriesland, Germany. He was married there. He came to America with his family. They came direct to Grundy county where they remained permanently. The first ten years that they were in this county they lived on a farm in Lincoln township. From there they moved to Melrose township where they farmed two years. In 1894 they moved to Holland which remained their home continually. Until late years Mr. Sitters looked after what draying business was needed here.
Mrs. Sitters died eight years ago. One child died in infancy. There are two sons and three daughters living. They are Mrs. J. Meester, Holland, Harm Sitters who has always made his home with his father, Mrs. Rene Orvis, Westgate, Ia., Henry Sitters Jr. from St. Paul. There are seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A nephew, Henry Renken, resides at Peoria, Ill. His niece, Mrs. Minnie Schradermeyer, from Rockford, Ill., has been housekeeper at the Sitters home the past six years and she helped much to make Mr. Sitters' declining years comfortable.
