Obituary Mrs. Smit

Mrs. Grietje Smit was born in Oostwold, Netherlands, on Jan. 14, 1857. She came to America about 30 years ago, residing in Holland, Iowa, until the time of her death. She was married to Harm Smit, who preceded her in death on May 17, 1934[sic]. To this union were born four children, two girls and two boys.

Mrs. Smit was a member in full communion of the Ditch Reformed church north of Holland. She has repeatedly expressed her longing for "the rest that remaineth for the children of God." Her constant testimony was that this world availeth nothing.

After a lingering illness of five weeks, she passed into her eternal reward on Tuesday, May 5, at 8:30 o'clock, at the age of 79 years.

The children that remain to mourn the loss of their mother are: Mrs. D. Werkman of Holland; Mrs. Ailert Timmer of Ackley; Jake and Henry Smit of Iowa Falls. She is also survived by 25 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; also a brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. A. Roemeling of Holland, besides many friends who will miss their aged friend.

Funeral services were held at the home Friday afternoon, the Rev. Voskuil, pastor of the Holland Chr. Reformed church, officiating. The Rev. Ilgen of the Holland Lutheran church offered prayer. A solo, "Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling," was sung.

Pallbearers were six grandsons: Marvin Smit, Anno, Henry, Harm and Dick Werkman, and Fred Timmer.

Interment was made in the Holland cemetery.
