Funeral Was Tuesday For Dena Hempen

Mrs. Dena Hempen, 78, who had been a patient at the Grundy County Memorial hospital four weeks, passed away there Saturday morning, Feb. 10, at 8:30. Death was attributed to complications of age.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at Bethany Presbyterian church with Rev. A. J. Straatmeyer officiating. Mrs. Roger Stachour was soloist. Burial was in the Grundy Center cemetery. Pallbearers were Tony Hinders, Reint Beenken, Lloyd Dreesman, Cyrrel Radechel, Paul Voss and Clarence Ennenga. Arrangements were made by the Engelkes Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hempen was born May 7, 1889, in Germany, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harm Claassen. She came to this country with her family at an early age. She married John Miller in 1913 and they farmed in this area. Mr. Miller died December 11, 1918. On June 20, 1930, she married Joe Hempen. They farmed in Lincoln township several years before moving to Grundy Center. Mr. Hempen died August 3, 1950.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Herman (Grace) Wiese of Fairbank; 4 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; one brother, Rudolph Claassen of Cedar Falls; two step-sons, Herman Hempen of Northwood and Albert Hempen, New Hartford; also two step-daughters, Mrs. Tony (Jennie) Emkes of Fredericksburg, and Mrs. John P. (Henrietta) Kruger of Holland.

Mrs. Hempen was a member of the Bethany Presbyterian church and the Women's Association.
