Rites Held Martha Peters
Martha Peters, of Parkersburg, passed away Tuesday, September 26, at the Maple Manor Nursing Home in Aplington. She had resided there since September 1 and had reached the age of 93 years, 3 months and 9 days.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 30, in Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg with Rev. Gary Olson officiating. Burial followed in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Holland.
Honorary pallbearer was Delmar Anthony Brass. Pallbearers were Michael Viet, Lynn Arends, Marlyn Peters, Leslie Janssen, Tim Higgens and Mike Niehaus.
Martha was born the daughter of Ait and Wemka Meinders Lauterbach on June 17, 1902, in Hancock Co., Wonden, Iowa. She received her education in the Sinclair School.
On November 26, 1922, Martha was united in marriage with Hilko Viet in her parents home. They lived north of Parkersburg, west of Fern and Wellsburg. Hilko died on November 2, 1933. In 1934, Martha moved to Parkersburg. On April 4, 1942, Martha married Hiet Peters in Parkersburg. Hiet died on May 27, 1973.
Martha worked at the Baker, Burr Oak and WaySide Inn both restaurants as a dishwasher. She later did babysitting. She was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg. She loved to cook and especially baking cookies for others. She enjoyed doing needle work and embroidering.
Martha is survived by 2 sons, Hilko Viet and Bernard Viet, both of Ackley; 5 daughters, Wilma Schultz of Parkersburg, Frances (Mrs. Irvin) Flessner, Jennie (Mrs. Delmar) Janssen and Marlys Arends, all of Ackley, and Esther Dickes of Streamwood, Illinois; 3 step-daughters, Tena Essman of Ackley, Minnie Blohm of Holland and Martha Niehaus of Grundy Center; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson; 13 step-grandchildren; 28 step-great-grandchildren and 32 step-great-great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Anna Harbach of Waterloo; and 1 brother, John Lauterbach of Maple Manor, Aplington.
She was preceded in death by both husbands; a stillborn son; a great-grandson; and her parents.
Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
