Jennie Syhlman, 88

Jennie Syhlman, 88, of Grundy Center died Wednesday, September 1, 1999, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit.

Jennie was born May 19, 1911, in Pleasant Valley Township, Grundy County, the daughter of Harm and Pearl Groen VanHauen. On November 28, 1938, she was united in marriage to Dude Syhlman at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed in the Dike area until Dude's death in 1967. In 1970, Jennie was employed by the University of Northern Iowa as the boy's dorm hall custodian. She retired from the University in 1986.

Jennie is survived by two brothers, Jake VanHauen and his wife, Jennie of Fern, and Herman and his wife, Martha of Grundy Center; two sisters, Tillie Pruin of Waterloo and Gladys Meyer and her husband, George of Cedar Falls.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dude in 1967; her parents; and one brother, Henry.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, September 3, at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church in rural Holland with Pastor Russell Mullenburg officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were James Syhlman, Kenneth VanHauen, Jack Syhlman, Harlan Pruin, Leland VanHauen, and George Meyer, Jr. Memorials may be directed to the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church.

Engelkes-Abels Funeral of Grundy Center was in charge of arrangements.
