Adam Poppen Dies In Hospital Sunday

Adam Poppen, lifelong resident of Colfax township and a resident of Holland since 1942, died early Sunday morning in the Grundy County Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Poppen had been a patient in the hospital one week due to a heart condition.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. this Wednesday in the home at Holland, and at 1:30 p.m. in the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church west of Fern. Rev. Albert Moss officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Adam Poppen was born April 22, 1889, in Colfax township, the son of Anna and Goke Poppen.

He was united in marriage to Hattie Brower on March 15, 1911, at the Pleasant Valley church parsonage by Rev. Siemsen of Holland. The couple farmed near Holland until they retired in 1942 and moved to town.

The deceased was a member of the Pleasant Valley church which he served as an elder for six years. He also served for three terms on the Holland town council.

Survivors include seven daughters and one adopted son. They are Edna, Mrs. Pete Hemmen, Jesup; Anna, Mrs. Ray Thoren, Holland; Grace, Mrs. Vernon Stahl, Wellsburg; Mabel, Mrs. Arthur Freese, Dike; Alida, Mrs. Thomas Dreesman, Dike; Matilda, Mrs. Irvin Dieken, Dike; Harriett, Mrs. Elmer Mulder, Parkersburg; and Henry Meinders of Jefferson, South Dakota.

Also surviving are 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother, Mrs. Lena Kessler, Grundy Center, Mrs. Jake J. Arends, Stout, and Rev. Otto Poppen, Aplington; and a foster sister, Mrs. Frances Kein of Andrew.
